36 recipients of the 59th Annual Peabody Awards were presented with awards on May 22, 2000 at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel in New York City. The winners were chosen by the Peabody board as the best in electronic media for the year 1999. Matt Lauer emceed. Recipients included Bob Simon, Sheila Nevins, Home Box Office Sports, C-Span, ESPN, FRONTLINE, WNET, PBS and ExxonMobil Masterpiece Theatre, among others. Winning shows included A Lesson Before Dying, American Presidents: Life Portraits, Dare to Compete: The Struggle of Women in Sports, Morning Edition with Bob Edwards, The Valley and The Sopranos.
