The photographs themselves are stunning, but what’s truly astounding about National Geographic’s documentary series Photographer is the way it shows the work behind the work. Few publications produce the level of photography that National Geographic does, and throughout six episodes, multiple Peabody winners E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin introduce us to the people who go to great lengths to make it happen. While some capture majestic natural phenomena with the aim of bolstering conservation, others engage in the mind-bogglingly intricate work of documenting an egg developing into a baby chick; but more mainstream work that develops from personal stories or from fashion shoots are given their due respect here, too.

Each of the episodes focuses on one photographer, their life, and their work. Here, a brief look at what we see and learn about each of them.
