South of Midnight

Compulsion Games

South of Midnight is an interactive folktale, one that asks players to do what its protagonist, Hazel Flood, must learn to do herself: sit with grief, confront the past, and mend what has been torn apart. Drawing from the rich tradition of Southern Gothic media and Afro-Southern folklore, South of Midnight treats its location in the U.S. South as more than merely ornament or backdrop. Its gameplay, score, art, and writing all reflect a deep reverence for culture, people, and places represented in the game. Hazel moves through a world that was made for her. Its stop-motion art style, visibly handmade and deliberately imperfect, places it in the tradition of folk art. Against the hyper-polished surfaces of contemporary games, it is an act of aesthetic defiance and cultural solidarity. For illuminating a so often overlooked corner of American cultural memory through extraordinary craft; for centering a Black woman’s healing journey not as subject matter to be mined but as a way of seeing the world; and for proving that interactive storytelling helps us understand the weight we carry and the possibility of setting it down, South of Midnight wins a Peabody Award.
