Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur
Flying Bark Productions, Disney Television Animation, Disney Branded Television
The Marvel universe has no shortage of heroes who have to wrestle with the responsibility that comes with their penchant for taking the mantle of an alter-ego in order to keep their communities safe. But with Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, showrunners Steve Loter and Pilar Flynn have nimbly adapted Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder’s comic series (2015-2019) into a contemporary tale of a girl coming into her own. Set on the Lower East Side of New York City, the dynamically animated TV series focuses on a young African-American girl named Lunella (voiced by Diamond White) who, along with a red Tyrannosaurus (voiced by Fred Tatasciore), uses her science skills to battle a slew of New York City-specific villains. With a stellar voice cast that also includes Alfre Woodard, Sasheer Zamata, Jermaine Fowler, and executive producer Laurence Fishburne himself—not to mention great music by Raphael Saadiq—this Disney+ series is a refreshing take on an age-old superhero origin story made all the more interesting in its second and final season. For putting a STEM-loving girl at the center of a heartwarming family story about embracing the bravery it takes to be wholly oneself, Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur wins a Peabody award.
