Los Espookys

Quirky, spooky, and defiantly original, Peabody honors season two of this stand-out comedy. Created and written by Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen, this half-hour American series pays homage to Latin America’s passion for the paranormal and Hollywood’s love of horror, all inside of a deadpan comedy with telenovela influences. Cassandra Ciangherotti, Bernardo Velasco, Torres, Fabrega, and Armisen play a group of misfits who bond over their shared love of the macabre. They’re a colorful crew—one’s a chocolate empire scion, another’s a human Fitbit–and together they turn their penchant for horror and gore into a start-up business. Their service? Fabricating frightening or inexplicably creepy situations for clients in need. One week they’re staging an eclipse to help a politician win her election, the next they’re helping an aging actor who wants their monotonous sitcom canceled. There also happens to be the spirit of a slain beauty queen who’s haunting them. Primarily a Spanish-language comedy with English subtitles and co-produced by Armisen and Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels, the series has amassed a loyal following of fans in the United States and across Latin America. For defying Hollywood’s old Latino tropes at every turn to take Latinx representation and bilingual comedy to a new level, Peabody honors the chillingly funny and wildly inventive Los Espookys.
