Fault Lines: “Kids Under Fire” and “The Disappearance of Dr. Abu Safiya”
Al Jazeera English
Nearly three years into the war on Gaza, the humanitarian toll remains unfathomable to much of the western world, but these Fault Lines segments render the devastation with clear, harrowing specificity: Both “Kids Under Fire” and “The Disappearance of Dr. Abu Safiya” document attacks on some of Gaza’s most vulnerable, and the healthcare facilities they turn to amid the ongoing violence. “Kids Under Fire” weaves testimony from several U.S. physicians who treated children in hospitals across the strip with medical records and other forensic materials, exposing a stark pattern of young children being targeted with gunshot wounds to the head and chest. When American physicians attempt to bring this information to U.S. lawmakers, they’re consistently brushed aside. And in “The Disappearance of Dr. Abu Safiya,” one physician’s desperate attempts to continue caring for his ailing people amid the attacks on Gaza leads to his (ongoing) imprisonment. The segment both recounts Dr. Safiya’s ordeal and explains the mechanism under which Israel continues to detain him, underscoring the terror that healthcare workers live under in Gaza—and the courage with which they fight it. For its precise, in-depth coverage of the ongoing crisis in Gaza and the violence against children and healthcare workers, we award Fault Lines a Peabody.
