Fall of ISIS In Iraq and Syria

CNN

Intense dramatic reporting from CNN’s war reporters revealed many sides of the fall of ISIS, and the devastation left in its wake. Nick Paton Walsh and his team had rare access to the final moments of the push against ISIS in the Old City of Mosul, seeing firsthand the fight for the symbolic Al-Nuri mosque. In an ongoing story that has been covered extensively, CNN impressed by providing refreshing angles and the creative use of technology. Stunning drone footage shot by freelance photographer Gabriel Chaim captured the incredible scope of ruined neighborhoods, while Atika Shubert and her team showed how WhatsApp voice messages became a lifeline between a Syrian woman living in the Netherlands and her daughter and grandson desperately trying to escape Raqqa as the fighting intensified. Arwa Damon gave us affecting stories of passion and humanity in a place overshadowed by death and destruction. For its continued investment in such war coverage, especially as global conflicts simmer, we commend CNN and honor it with a Peabody Award.
