Come See Me in the Good Light

Apple / Tripod Media / Amplify Pictures / Treat Media / Something Fierce Productions

Andrea Gibson’s poetry was their way of making sense of their life, their world, and, eventually the disease that upended everything they had worked so hard to build with their partner, fellow poet Megan Falley. Ryan White’s warmhearted documentary about Gibson’s 2024—a year they spent in treatment for ovarian cancer—is partly about what it’s like to grieve a life you may not get to live, but it’s also a hopeful vision of what it takes to enjoy the very life you do have. Laced throughout with Gibson’s slam poetry, whose language cuts through emotional truths with wounding simplicity, White’s portrait of Gibson and Falley is melancholy without feeling maudlin, sentimental without feeling cloying. The vulnerability on display (during chemo treatments, in candid confessionals, and even during packed poetry shows) is enough to power the documentary through the difficulty of watching someone grapple in real time with knowing their end could and would be around the corner. (Gibson lived to see the doc premiere at Sundance; they passed in July 2025 at age 49.) For offering a deeply personal vision of how artistry and love can nourish us even in our darkest moments, Come See Me in the Good Light wins a Peabody award.
