Black Box Diaries
Hanashi Films, Cineric Creative, and Star Sands
In a time where stories of powerful men abusing women have become all too common, Black Box Diaries is upsettingly familiar: A young female journalist in Japan says an older male journalist with power, prestige, and connections to the prime minister raped her, and no one believes her. But Shiori Itō doesn’t allow the police who refuse to help her or the media who smear her to conclude her story. She keeps talking about what Noriyuki Yamaguchi did to her, tracking down people who saw them the night of the attack and using her smartphone to record their conversations. As she keeps pushing for the truth, Black Box Diaries reaches a level of intimacy and fury that’s impossible to shake. For Itō’s resilience and the thoroughness of her investigation, Black Box Diaries wins a Peabody Award.
