FAQ

WHAT ARE PEABODY AWARDS GIVEN FOR?

Winning a Peabody Award is the defining achievement for programs and individuals alike. For over 80 years, we have championed the creativity and achievements of storytellers across television, streaming, radio, and digital media. Each year, 30 Peabody Awards are given for entertainment, documentary, news, podcast and radio, children’s/youth, and public service programming. Special awards are also given to individuals for career achievement and institutions for their long-standing body of work.

In 2022, Peabody expanded its award categories to recognize storytelling achievements across interactive, immersive and new media categories, including Gaming, Interactive Journalism, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality,  Social Video, Interactive Documentary, Transmedia Storytelling, and more.

There are no set criteria for judging the winners. Peabody Awards recognize stories that illuminate social issues with depth and complexity as much as stories that entertain and inspire through their art or voice. We honor stories that matter.

WHEN ARE THE PEABODY AWARDS?

For television/streaming/podcast and radio: Entries for work produced in that calendar year are accepted annually in the fall, typically from October to December. Nominations and winners are announced the following spring, with the annual awards ceremony taking place in May/June. The annual ceremony is typically held in New York or Los Angeles.

For interactive and immersive: Entries for work produced in that calendar year are accepted annually from August to October.

WHO DECIDES THE WINNERS?

The selection of the annual nominees and winners is based on a rigorous deliberative process and face-to-face discussions among diverse Boards of Jurors.  Peabody currently has a Broadcast Board and an Interactive Board. Both boards are comprised of media professionals, scholars, critics, and journalists, and are designed to reflect a broad cross-section of voices, experiences, and audiences.
